R.D.F. aka Radical Dance Faction

The band have now reformed and are now known as Military Surplus/RDF. Radical Dance Faction (RDF) were founded by Chris Bowsher in Hungerford, 1986, and were originally known as 'Military Surplus'. The band experienced many line up changes, and Chris remained the only original member up to the time RDF split up (sometime in the late 1990's). RDF's music combined punk, dub, and ska, while Chris' lyrics, spoken rather than song, dealt mainly with political issues, such as the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in the song Chinese Poem. Chris also witnessed first hand the Hungerford massacre, describing his experience in Hot on the Wire. RDF were a regular act on the UK free festival scene prior to the 1994 Criminal Justice Act, and were part of the crusty and anarcho punk movement. In August 2006 Military Surplus/RDF reformed and played at the Endorse it in Dorset festival. more gigs are planned. * Steve Swann, one of RDFs original line-up, co-founded the Revolutionary Dub Warriors & is member of the reformed, dub, ska band Dub The Earth. * Phil left RDF in 1995, and together with other ex-RDF members and John from AOS3 , formed P.A.I.N * Linda went on to become a member of the band DF118 . * Mark McCarthey joined The Wonder Stuff in 2004. * Murph joined The Rhytmites

Biography
ESTABLISHED in 1995, The Propaganda And Information Network (as P.A.I.N is officially named) was first put together from the ashes of two seminal free festival bands: A.O.S.3 and Radical Dance Faction. Brought together to carry on the same Anarcho-style rantings, but with a much harder, Punk Rock attitude to it (less toking and more drinking!) within the first 7 days of forming P.A.I.N managed to book up a 3 week tour, literally writing the set in soundchecks. The band went from strength to strength releasing their first live demo (Prison's no Place for Punishment - a real collector's item these days,) within their first month of existence. Well that was 11 years ago. Since then P.A.I.N. have released 2 studio albums, 2 cd singles and a couple of live albums, and are currently working on a new studio album and a P.A.I.N. in Dub album. There are a few gigs springing up around the country and more tours coming up in a couple of weeks so things are going great guns at the moment. "Sharpen your cutlasses boys, theres a mighty stormy sea ahead!!"

P.A.I.N: Oh My God, We're Doing it....was originally released on Inner State back in 1995 the album sold out and after the collapse of Inner State had been lost until it's re-issue on Iron Man records in 2005. The Original artwork was reconstructed to be as close to the original as possible and the track listing includes all the classics from the P.A.I.N set:

Beltane, Everything must Go, Pork Dub, British Justice, No leaders for the Free, Money, Oh No! It's the Pigs, Lighters and Punx with Guns.

The album includes the work of Phil, Dan and Ozzy who were all in R.D.F. Phil has also played guitar with RUBELLA BALLET and sings with Suicide Bid. John sang with A.O.S.3. (and also LEGION OF DYNAMIC DISCHORD and later a band called LESS and these days ERIS)

This record was seen by P.A.I.N as the third in a trilogy, RDF: Raggamuffin Statement, A.O.S.3: Diversionary Tactics and this CD P.A.I.N: Oh My God! We're Doing it.

The Band has supported numerous underground struggles and pressure groups along the way, working extensively with groups like Reclaim the Streets, Anti-globalisation groups, Hunt Saboteurs, Anti-fascists, Squatters, Mad Pride,MacLibel, and many more....

That's the politics, however, it would be to sell the band short to say the story stops there...They are, like most punk bands, part Pistols, part Spinal Tap (actually, was there much difference?) and the best things about PAIN are the stories of what has happened to them over the years, genuinely unbelievable situations...Contrary to the many rumours circulating, the band have not split up, they never did. The band are alive and well and gigging all over the place, writing songs for the next album. The times they are a -changing!

P.A.I.N - O.U.C.H: The long awaited second album from P.A.I.N, sees the South London conspiracy offer the world a radioactive audio file crammed full of Nuclear Dub, Genetically modified Ska, and BSE laced Punk rock.

The album is about the prison system, its use against the defenceless, and laws that cannot be defended. The band have found allies in both expected and unexpected places, such as the well documented liason with Howard Marks and the welcome support of Kate Bush. Always outspoken, P.A.I.N see their music as a vehicle of political expression;

"There is much more to 'Our Universe' than the prohibition of Cannabis, you only have to look at the poetic irony of simultaneous fuel protests and widespread environmental catastrophe. Everyone will talk of the necessity for radical change, yet still, nothing changes. Are we all just consumers for the profit of the IMF? Do our lives really amount to a column of figures? Just who has the power now? Surprisingly, it's still all of us. The Protest Movement has become global in response, and we now have a genuine opportunity to fight back at the real enemy; no longer the copper, or politician, but the evil bastards who claim with a straight face that they own 90% of the worlds resources. We are all born on this planet and every single human being alive has an equal right to life, air, water, and food. They tell us that this is being naive and unrealistic. We tell them that we will never rest until our demands are met, they had better sleep lightly."

Original sleeve artwork by top British cartoonist Pete Loveday whose "Saga of Russell" comic books can be found around the world. Vinyl edition is limited to 1,000 copies with gatefold sleeve, CD version has 2 extra tracks.

Members of P.A.I.N can also be found in SUICIDE BID, RUBELLA BALLET, LESS, ERIS and LEGION OF DYNAMIC DISCHORD.

AOS3

Formed in 1990 in Sunderland AOS3 played many Free Festivals & venues of the time including Bala Silver moon, Ribblehead, the famous Castle Morton & Newcastle Anti Fascist Carnival with the Shamen! Blaggers ITA, Credit to the nation & Fundamental. Other regular gig buddies included Citizen Fish, RDF, Back to the planet, Revolutionary Dub Warriors, Poisoned Electric Head, Bender,Scum of Toytown, , Octafish, Gustav's Blim, Dig & many more. AOS3 released two albums, 'God's Secret Agent ' in 1992 for Words of Warning, and 'Diversionary Tactics' in 1995 for Inna State Records. They also released 3 singles- Conspiracy/Tv Dinners split 7" with Citizen Fish, and Tottenham Three- a cover of the classic Tottenham AK47'S Track. They went on to tour Eastern and Western Europe with Citizen Fish and others, and finally exploded in the xmas of 1994, at a poorly attended gig in Liverpool. AOS3 were always a festival band at heart, for their members had initially been a group of best friends whose passion was for the free festival scene of the early nineties, and here they were massively influenced by the music that played around them as they wandered giggling around, provoking such acerbic gems as 'Dont worry, it's just a bunch of hippies', as they stumbled past other punters. AOS3 found themselves becoming increasingly politicised by their new experiences. 1994's Criminal Justice Bill spelled the end of the free festival scene as it had been known, and also was the year of passing for many bands involved, as their favourite events were illegalised and driven underground or into the hands of businessmen. The most commonly asked question was always, what does it mean? We can reveal it meant "Augustus Owsley Stanley 3rd", Dealer, underground chemist and cohort of the grateful dead, allegedly still at large. Many folk presumed it was Austin Osman Spare, but synchronous as that is (and AOS3 always loved a good conspiracy) sadly, no... AOS3 were adopted and befriended by both RDF and CITIZEN FISH, which was frankly, their dream come true back then...we owe both bands a lot for the breaks they provided. It's worth mentioning that AOS3 probably plagairised the works of Robert Anton Wilson more heavily than any other band , ever! (except possibly FUNZIG!) Their roadcrew deserve a mention too, the incredible Tom Bolsover, Ian 'Jeffa' Jefferson, and occasional tour manager Ian 'Hutch' Hutchins. After AOS3 John went on to sing with P.A.I.N, LESS, & LDD, Colin played in JESSE (with Frankie stubbs from Leatherface) & Andy joined TARANTISM However, as of 2007, AOS3 ARE TO FINALLY REEMERGE FROM A 13 YEAR SABBATICAL TO REVIVE THE FESTY SOUND OF YORE, AND WRITE A 3RD LP! HURRAH! I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING.
